I played the game by all the rules
The other player wasn't fair
So the best man didn't win
I lost everything right there

Things were looking good for my new store
but a rumor spread around town
I ignored it and minded my own business
Now I'm forced to close the store down

I'm not sure if that goes for my neighbor
but I know his brand new car is looking good

The last coals of the beachfire are still smouldering
as the gang wakes up one by one to find Jake missing
Little Lou's staring over the water against the rising sunlight
then remembers Jake parting with one of the girls who partied along last night
Jake's still sleeping in the guestroom of his uncle's place
He doesn't notice the soft fingers gently touching his face
His slight hangover's almost awoken by his snore
as she zips up her summer dress and quietly closes the door
Party nights & campfire lights & bottles in the sand
Bruised hearts & missing parts & one night stands
Silent goodbyes & joyful cries & searching souls
Old fears & hearts in high gears & uncertain goals
Kate's just in time to sneak into bed before her grandma awakes
She wouldn't want to upset her and Kate knows how little it takes
She's not supposed to stay out as late as she's done
But it had been such a long time since she had such fun
Jake's in his shorts and shirt trying to find a trace
that proves the girl was not in his dreams but right in his face
She didn't leave a note, didn't tell where she could be found
But her taste is still on his lips and in his ears is her sound

Kate's standing at the station with a backpack at her feet
Jake spent all day walking through the streets
She eenie-meenie-minie-moes the cities that attract her
Jake thinks if he finds her he could be her life-long protector
For the first time Kate doubts if she sould stay on the run
For Jake it had been such a long time since he had such fun
Something inside her says never again will she get such a lovely fever
But she's so scared that he would also leave her
